Arrival in São Paulo and transfer for a 2–3 hour drive to Pousada Trilha dos Tucanos, one of the Atlantic Forest’s most celebrated birding lodges. Upon arrival for lunch, you will be greeted by vibrant feeders, colorful birds, and excellent opportunities to photograph hummingbirds and other iconic species. The afternoon is free to explore the lodge’s surroundings, an area with remarkable wildlife density. Later, we begin our first hummingbird photography session, focused on technique and capturing multiple species. After dinner at the lodge, nighttime setups are arranged to attract different moth morphs. By the next morning, these setups often draw a wide variety of insect-feeding bird species, creating excellent opportunities for unique photographs.
At sunrise, we will begin a walk around the lodge in search of iconic species such as the Saffron Toucanet, Red-breasted Toucan, and various species of tanagers. After the walk, breakfast will be served in front of the feeders — a privileged spot where the constant movement of birds provides excellent opportunities for observation and photography. Next, we will continue with a trail through the dense Atlantic Forest, where we may encounter squirrels, Spotted Paca, Tapir, and several other forest-dwelling species. Lunch will be served at the lodge, followed by free time for each participant to explore the area at their own pace. In the late afternoon, we will have another dedicated hummingbird photography session. With more practice and new opportunities, you’ll be able to capture different species in dynamic flight. We end the day with dinner and overnight accommodation at the lodge.
After the flight Transfer to the Southern Pantanal & First Wildlife Encounters Before breakfast, we will take a final walk around the lodge, exploring the surrounding area in search of additional bird species before departure. We then head to the airport in time for the scheduled flight to Campo Grande, where ground transportation will be waiting to take us to Aguapé Lodge. Over the next two days, we will explore a completely different ecosystem, with opportunities to observe a wide range of wildlife, including Giant Anteaters, Lesser Anteaters, Tapirs, Crab-eating Foxes, and several species of macaws. Arrival at the lodge will depend on the flight schedule, and activities for the day will be adjusted accordingly.
We begin at sunrise with a safari focused on finding Giant Anteaters and other key wildlife species that inhabit the Southern Pantanal. After the morning outing, breakfast will be served at the lodge. Following breakfast, we will head out on a boat excursion in search of the striking Band-tailed Manakin. During the boat ride, there are also good chances of encountering Giant Otters and a wide variety of bird species. Lunch will be served at 12:00, followed by time to rest before the afternoon safari at 15:00. This drive takes us through areas surrounding the lodge, offering unique opportunities to spot additional wildlife. We will continue directly into a night safari, expanding our chances of observing nocturnal species before returning to the lodge for dinner.
On our final morning, we will depart the lodge with enough time to reach the airport for our flight to Cuiabá. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the hotel for check-in and an evening at leisure. This overnight stay in Cuiabá prepares us for the next stage of the journey, when we will enter the wild landscapes of the Pantanal, home to the region’s most iconic felines.
The first part of the journey covers approximately 100 km—about one hour—along a paved road to Poconé, the gateway to the Pantanal and the last town before entering the world’s largest wetland. From Poconé, you will continue along the famous Transpantaneira Highway, a route known for its excellent opportunities to observe and photograph wildlife. Upon arriving at the lodge in the late afternoon, you will have your first chance to see and photograph ocelots. Accommodation and dinner will be provided at the lodge.
Experience an early-morning safari followed by scenic boat trips along the Pixaim River, an area known for its rich biodiversity and excellent wildlife viewing. Throughout the day, you will explore prime habitats for birds, mammals, and other species that thrive in this region. In the afternoon, you will have another opportunity to observe and photograph the ocelot, increasing your chances of a remarkable sighting.
Continue your journey to Porto Jofre – State Park, the heart of jaguar territory. Along the way, keep your eyes open for excellent wildlife-viewing opportunities, as this route offers some of the best locations for observing and photographing animals in their natural environment. You will arrive at the Panoramico Flotel in the late afternoon, where you will check in and enjoy dinner. Accommodation will be provided at a hotel within Porto Jofre – State Park.
The Pantanal offers the best conditions for boat-based wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and photography. Each morning begins early, taking advantage of soft light and peak animal activity. From the lodge, we navigate the rivers of the Meeting of the Waters State Park, one of the region’s largest protected areas and the top location for observing jaguars in the wild. Thanks to the high density of prey along these waterways in Mato Grosso, sightings of jaguars hunting, resting, or patrolling the riverbanks are frequent—especially between June and November. Throughout the day, encounters may include Giant Otters, Tapirs, Capybaras, Yellow Anacondas, Howler and Capuchin Monkeys, and several iconic bird species. It’s not uncommon to enjoy lunch with a jaguar in view. We make safe stops when needed, and our team ensures you never miss a photographic opportunity during this premier jaguar safari experience.
Leave the lodge at the scheduled time for your flight. This marks the end of our journey.
Santa Tereza Lodge (SouthWild) is located at kilometer 57 of the Transpantaneira Highway. Its privileged position along the Pixaim River offers comfortable accommodations, a variety of activities, and exclusive wildlife observation hides.
It is also the only place in the Pantanal where guests can reliably observe and photograph ocelots in the wild.
